Softswitch types: Class 4 and class 5 softswitches



Softswitch can be called as central device that connects one telephone line to another across public internet or a telecommunication network. Softswitch is basically a software that enables calling through internet. Using softswitch services can get you many benefits like it offers low priced and quality calling. Moreover it is beneficial for long distance or international calls as if you connect without internet, you may be charged Rs 13 per minute. It is not a less amount if  you want to have a long duration call. Businesses generally prefer internet calling due to its affordable and low cost feature.

Although, landlines are routed by means of purpose built electronic hardware but softswitch using VoIP technology are becoming more and more popular these days. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is the cutting edge technology that finds its application in internet calling. VoIP server is hosted by softswitch service providers that enables calling through internet. Caller has to pay a fee to the system owner. The system owner then direct call to recipients. The dialer is provided with a unique number  with the sequence based on the location and network  used. VoIP softswitch enables easy and low cost calling. VoIP is also referred as  PBX solution that embrace various features such as callback, callshop,  calling card, IPRN solution and many more add-ons. Callshop feature is the advanced form of booth system in which people used to make calls from different physical locations.

Softswitches are divided as class 4 and class 5 switches. These are divided on the basis  of different features they provide.  The main function of class 4 softswitch is routing of large volume of long distance calls. It transits VoIP traffic between different users. The significant characteristics of class 4 softswitch are transcoding, protocol support and conversion,  one call routing, call per second rate and number of concurrent calls.

Class 5 softswitches basically work for end users. These are used for both  local and long distance calls. For corporate clients and regular users,  class 5 softswitches  have many more services such as call center services, IP PBX feature, type of authorization,, calling card platform,  business group, Qos and many more.
